About me

Hey there, I’m Ben Woodcraft—yes, I am a carpenter, and that’s my real name! I’ve spent over 20 years in the building trade, starting off as a carpenter and joiner apprentice and gradually expanding my skills to include everything from plastering to bricklaying, electrics, and plumbing. I’m a practical guy who loves working with wood, and today, I want to share my passion and knowledge through “Have a Go,” a business dedicated to DIY training.

DIY Training : Building Confidence and Saving Money

You know, a lot of customers and friends tell me, “I wish I could do what you’re doing, Ben. If only I had the confidence.” My response is always the same: “Have a Go, and just give me a call if you need advice.” Because I get it; DIY can seem intimidating, but I can help.

Though I specialise in carpentry projects, such as stable blocks, garden rooms, sheds, and even oak frame structures, I’ve worked on everything from large extensions to full-scale renovations. That includes fitting kitchens, bathrooms, doing repairs, hanging doors and skirting boards, and tons more. Now, I want to use that experience to help others gain the confidence to tackle DIY projects around the house.

The Basics of DIY: Tools and Techniques

Let’s talk basics. In my DIY training courses, I start by focusing on fundamental skills that lay the foundation for more complex projects. We’ll go over choosing the right tools, and mastering them. For example, I’ll show you how to use a cordless drill to screw straight in wood. Then we’ll tackle common skills like putting up shelves, tiling, floor-laying. You can choose from various options when you book.

DIY Project Courses

Or, you can choose a project-based course, like Hanging doors. I’ll guide you through hanging a door—a task that can save you hundreds of pounds once you get the ‘hang’ of it. Because once you’ve hung one door, you can hang 10, or 20.

The great things about choosing a project based DIY Training is that Hanging a door isn’t just about the door; it’s about learning to use essential tools like a drill, hammer, chisel, plane, and level. And guess what? These tools become your trusty sidekicks for various other projects.
